Summary:
Twisted hydraulic hose is one of the most overlooked causes of premature hose failure, seal leakage and unexpected downtime in hydraulic systems. Following the SAE J518 standard, this guide introduces the standard installation procedure for split SAE flanges and proper anti-twist hose routing practices. It helps engineers and system integrators achieve twist-free piping layout, improving the reliability of hydraulic systems used in construction machinery, mining, offshore & wind power equipment. JETE FITTINGS supplies full-size split SAE flanges with fast lead time and custom OEM service.

In hydraulic fluid power systems, split SAE flanges (SAE J518 split flanges, Code 61 / Code 62) are widely adopted for high-pressure applications thanks to their excellent pressure resistance, reliable sealing and easy disassembly. They are commonly fitted on excavators, TBM tunneling machines, die-casting equipment, hydraulic power units for wind turbines, marine and offshore machinery.
Many field technicians focus on tightening torque for flange bolts but ignore hose twisting. Even a slight twist on the hose will create uneven stress on the steel reinforcement layers under cyclic pressure pulses. This may lead to hose delamination, bulging, burst failure and sealing leakage at the flange face, shortening hose service life and bringing safety risks and production shutdowns.
To solve this common industry pain point, JETE FITTINGS has prepared this practical installation guide for split SAE flanges. The core focus is twist-free hose routing to help OEMs, maintenance teams and hydraulic integrators achieve standardized assembly and reduce piping failures.
I. Pre-installation Preparation
1. Verify Part Numbers & Specifications
Confirm whether the split flange is Code 61 (3000 PSI) or Code 62 (6000 PSI). Never mix Code 61 and Code 62 components. Check DN size and flange head dimension to match the hydraulic hose assembly. Distinguish standard flanges from custom adapter flanges.
2. Clean Sealing Surfaces
Remove metal chips, oil stains and dust from the flange groove, flange head and O-ring seat. Do not use flanges with deep scratches or dents on sealing faces.
3. Inspect Accessories
Select compatible O-rings (NBR or FKM as required). Check the two-piece flange clamps, bolts, flat washers and spring washers for damage. Avoid stretching or twisting O-rings before installation.
4. Mark the Hose Reference Line
Use the longitudinal lay line printed on the hose outer cover as the reference mark. This line is the simplest way to check twisting. Keep the lay line straight without spiraling during routing.
Ⅱ. Standard Installation Steps for Split SAE Flanges
1. Place the O-ring
Apply a thin coat of compatible hydraulic oil for lubrication. Seat the O-ring evenly into the sealing groove, make sure it sits fully in the groove with no twist or pinch.
2. Align & Close the Split Flange Clamp
Wrap the two halves of the split flange clamp around the flange head. Thread four bolts by hand first. Do not tighten one side fully. Keep the two halves parallel and centered.
3. Tighten Bolts in Diagonal Sequence
Tighten bolts diagonally in 2–3 stages to the specified torque value. Never fully tighten one bolt at a time, which will cause tilted flange and uneven sealing pressure.
4. Lock Hose Fitting Without Twisting (Critical Step)
Use two wrenches: one wrench holds the flange fitting stationary, the other tightens the nut. Do NOT rotate the hose itself to screw the fitting, which is the main cause of hose twist.
5. Adjust Routing & Support
After flange assembly, arrange the hose along its natural relaxed path. Do not force the hose to rotate just to align mounting holes. Use SAE elbows or adapter flanges for angle adjustment instead.
6. Pressure Test & Inspection
After completing the whole piping circuit, perform staged pressure testing. Hold pressure and check for oil leakage at flange joints and hose connections before putting the system into operation.
III. Core Rules for Hose Routing: Prevent Twist & Extend Service Life
1. Keep the hose lay line straight
Whether routed horizontally or vertically, the longitudinal lay line should remain straight. A spiral lay line means the hose is twisted and needs repositioning.
2. Leave sufficient slack to avoid tension
Reserve proper hose length where cylinders move or equipment vibrates. Prevent tensile load from transferring to the SAE flange sealing interface during operation.
3. Respect minimum bend radius
Keep bends away from the hose end near the flange. Follow the hose datasheet for minimum bend radius. Sharp bends right at the fitting are prohibited.
4. Add clamps for long runs
Install pipe clamps at reasonable intervals for long hoses. Reduce continuous vibration and dead weight load on SAE flange connections.
5. Keep away from abrasion and high heat
Route hoses clear of sharp edges and hot manifolds. Add protective sleeves if necessary to avoid external abrasion.

Closing
The reliability of split SAE flange connections depends on machining precision, sealing quality, standardized assembly and rational hose routing. A large share of hydraulic failures are not caused by defective flanges, but by hidden assembly defects such as hose twist. Adopting twist-free routing practice helps cut maintenance cost from leakage and hose burst, and improves overall hydraulic equipment stability.
